There’s a beautiful place in the hills of Helambu, Nepal called Melamchighyang, a valley also known as Yolmo. Trekkers pass through this valley going to or coming from Langtang and unbeknownst to many this hidden land is a sacred pilgrimage spot for Tibetan Buddhists. These valleys, also called Beyuls are hidden lands scattered through Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan blessed by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) as places of refuge. Today you can visit the caves  where he practiced and make offerings to the geographic features associated with Dharma protectors. Ian Baker wrote in the “Heart of the World”, They are places where physical and spiritual worlds overlap and Tantric practice effectiveness increases with multiple perception dimensions. Making these even more magical and mysterious places then meets our ordinary eyes.

Buddhist texts indicate beyuls are discovered when the planet is approaching destruction and the world becomes too corrupt for spiritual practice…which seems right for the times we’re in now. There is much that has been predicted and prophesied by Guru Rinpoche and other realized beings that has come to fruition in current times. Enough to give me goosebumps just imagining the incomprehensible web of karma we weave while plugging away, unknowingly writing our own play. In this life there is more than meets the eye and more than just what we “think.”  Our relationship to our external world can put us on spin cycle if we never look into our thoughts and emotions to see their nature. If we don’t ask we’ll never know, if we don’t look we’ll never see. To practice, starting to shine a light on and soften the self that we’ve worked so hard to build and protect, we can then truly be kind to ourselves.

May all beings realize the nature of mind.
